Japan symposium

Last Friday the study tour Sakura Zensen organised a symposium about Japan. These presentations prepared the participants on what to expect when we travel to Japan.

The first speaker was professor Wilfred van der Wiel. He gave an introduction of Japan, where he talked about Japanese people, Japan’s rich history and culture. He especially focussed on his own experiences during the time he worked there and warned us that we will definitely stand out.
The second invited speaker was Jan-Willem van der Wal. He is the co-founder of Medical Measurement Systems. Due to his business and personal interests, he travels a lot throughout Asia and Japan being his personal favourite Asian country to visit. His presentation gave insight in the business culture of Japan and the customs. He advised us to bring a lot of business cards, that we can share with the many people we will meet.
The third and last speaker of the day was Kodai Hatakeyama. He talked about all the practical information required to survive in Japan. He learned us some useful Japanese phrases to get daily goods and gave us an estimation of the local prices in the supermarket. He also talked about the delicious food and manners.

These three speakers provided a very useful and interesting symposium. All the participants gained a lot of insight in Japan and are looking forward to the journey. Afterwards, we went to a Japanese restaurant in Enschede, where we discussed the topics in the symposium while enjoying delicious Japanese food.

The whole symposium was recorded on video, the file is available here.
